 About LANL Subcontractor Consortium

Background

Following Los Alamos National Laboratory's (LANL) 1995 downsizing, the RDC was created to be LANL's "Community Reuse Organization" and tasked with disbursing $8.9 million in Department of Energy funding for economic diversification projects throughout Los Alamos, Rio Arriba, and Santa Fe Counties. The RDC's relationship with LANL has been evolving ever since. The RDC's federal designation as LANL's Community Reuse Organization perfectly positions the RDC to assist LANL in implementing the Lab's own regional economic development strategies required under its University of California/Department of Energy management contract. The RDC currently partners with LANL in advisory and contractual capacities, serving as the Lab's economic development matchmaker; identifying potential economic development projects and matching them with the variety of resources LANL can offer. The RDC houses four LANL-supported initiatives which capitalize this matchmaking role.

The RDC currently partners with LANL in advisory and contractual capacities, serving as the Lab's economic development matchmaker; identifying potential economic development projects and matching them with the variety of resources LANL can offer.

LANL's Major Subcontractors have economic development requirements as part of their subcontracts with LANL, making each Major Subcontractor a valuable source of resources for the region's economic development. In 2004, LANL's Business Operations Division formed the LANL Subcontractors Consortium to serve as a economic development collaboration platform for the Major Subcontractors. The Consortium's goal is to increase the economic impact of individual Subcontractor economic development contributions by creating and implementing a joint Subcontractor strategy where Major Subcontractors pool resources to meet their economic development contractual requirements.

The RDC facilitates the work of the Consortium by assisting in strategy creation, identifying viable economic development projects, managing group communications, and promoting the Consortium's economic development work.

LANL Major Subcontractors Offer Grants to Local Non-profit Organizations - Wednesday, August 06, 2008

KSL donates $50,000 to Consortium Economic Development Grant Pool

Los Alamos, New Mexico -  Christina Archuleta-Mares, Client Services Manager for KSL Contracts, presented a $50,000 check to the Los Alamos National Laboratory’s (LANL) Consortium of Major Subcontractors’ Economic Development Grant Pool on July 16th.

The Consortium is a group of major LANL subcontractors formed in February 2004 to manage resources they have committed to enhance Northern New Mexico’s economic development.

The Economic Development Grant Pool is one of several Consortium initiatives.  The purpose of the Grant Pool is to provide Consortium members with a way to make high-impact cash contributions to the region’s economic development.

In 2007, the Taos Community Foundation; Movimiento; and the Los Alamos Commerce and Development Corporation received grants to conduct youth entrepreneurship projects in Northern New Mexico. The Santa Fe Farmers Market; Luciente; Taos Community Foundation; Espanola Valley Fiber Arts Center; and ACCION New Mexico received grants in support of industry cluster development.

“LANL Subcontractors are privileged to be able to help some exemplary Northern New Mexico organizations to address basic economic development needs,” said Archuleta-Mares.

Consortium Grant Pool Committee Chair, Liddie Martinez, Director of Community and Economic Development Division of SOC Los Alamos, another LANL major subcontractor, added “By investing in Youth Entrepreneurship programs and Industry Cluster Development projects that create and strengthen local small businesses, LANL Subcontractors are supporting community-based organizations who help diversify the local economy and that is a big win for the entire Northern New Mexico region,”

A Grant Pool subcommittee made up of Consortium members has issued Requests for Proposals (RFP) from local economic development agencies. Deadline for receipt of completed applications is August 29, 2008.  Local organizations that would like to receive the RFP can call Scott Beckman, Program Manager, Regional Development Corporation at 505-989-8004 or e-mail scott@rdcnm.org.
